2005 Indy Chinese Tennis Open

By Peggy Hu

The first Indy Chinese Tennis Open officially started on June 5th at Carmel High School tennis complex. IACA, ICCCI, and China Journal Indiana have prepared this tennis open for a long time. The Newspaper is in charge of advertisement and reporting; and members of IACA/ICCCI formed a committee to organize the event. The committee members include : Diana Yung, Michael Shen, Hansen Hsiung, Solomon Lee, Peggy Hu, Steven He and Youyan Zhang.

There are about 40 players registered with the oldest over 60 years old and the youngest, only 9 years old. The tournament does not have referees for matches. Players watch the lines for themselves. The players uphold the principle of “friendship first, winning second.” Our Tennis Open provides good opportunity for players to find new friends and playmates. One of the players said: “I was not able to find any Chinese to play tennis two years ago. Today I am very glad to see so many Chinese playing tennis. Some of them play very well.”

The Tennis Open has men’s single and doubles, women’s single and doubles, mixed doubles. In order to shorten the tournament, players play round ribbons within each group. Each match contains one “super set” of nine games. The tournament has gone through 7 weeks already. We hope it will finish by next weekend. So far the following winners have emerged:

Men’s single 3.5 group: 1. Weiqun Shen, 2. Weiying Li, 3. Michael Tu.
Men’s single 3.0 group: 1. He Wang, 2. Mingsheng Wang, 3. Xiaodong Liu.
Women’s single: 1st place: Jian Liu, 2nd place: Daoping Xu, 3rd place: Susie Chen.
