7. Cultural and Education Outreach

The IACA Cultural and Education Outreach program went to Connersville, Indiana to celebrate Chinese New Year on February 15, 2002. Joyous festivities and our treasured customs were introduced to the students. The students also enjoyed sharing of candies and receiving “Hung Bao” which they were taught to receive with both hands and announce the greeting “Hung Hey Fat Choy” and “Tze-Tze”. The program was cheerfully ended with the whole class popping our homemade “firecrackers”.

Chinese New Year Celebration was the theme for the “Cooking with Daina & Friends” radio talk show on AM 1430. Chinese New Year traditions, customs and food were broadcasted over the radio waves at 9:00 AM on February 9, 2002 and received positive feed back from Daina’s fans & audiences.

8. Asian Festival at Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School

On March 18th, Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School held their third annual Asian Festival. IACA members, Frances Russell, Yvonne Shen and Patricia Loh were there to help in the Chinese Cultural
Exhibit and provided food for the festival. Frances taught some Brebeuf students to do the Lion Dance during the previous week, and the students did an outstanding job of the Lion Dance during the festival. IACA Posters of Chinese New Year celebrations, and Chinese paper cutting were displayed at the Chinese Booth. Yvonne wrote the students’ names in Chinese Calligraphy and was again a big hit. The students also did some paper cutting.

The Asian Festival was sponsored by the Asian Club of Brebeuf to promote Asian cultural awareness. Over 600 students and faculty attended the event.
