Notes From The President

Over 1200 concert goers filled the Hilbert Circle Theatre on the night of September 5 for a performance by the China National Traditional Orchestra that was co-hosted by the Indiana Association of Chinese-Americans (IACA) and The Lilly Chinese Culture Club (CCC). At the conclusion of the evening, everyone in attendance simply marveled at the beautiful music. This was, after all, no typical "Western" orchestra. Some of the audience might have seen and heard some of the musical instruments for the first time in their life. To some of us, the music just brought back fond memories from home. The China National Traditional Orchestra was on a U.S. tour and they made Indianapolis one of their stops, thanks to the effort of IACA council member/CCC president Eddie Chio. The same orchestra had performed in such prestigious music halls as The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and Chicago Symphony Orchestra Center.

This year's celebration of the Autumn Moon Festival was again held at the White River Park. More than 100 people participated in the celebration, the largest crowd ever. The evening was perfect with mild weather and a light breeze. Everyone enjoyed moon cakes and a romantic lantern walk along the bank of White River. It was quite a scene with all the lanterns dangling in the dark like the lights of a million lightning bugs.

The International Festival will be held at the State Fair Ground this year from October 19 through 21. IACA will team up with Families with Children from China (FCC) to have a culture display. with the theme "Celebrating Chinese Festivals". It promises to be very informative and interactive. We do need volunteers, so please contact Raymond Wong if you are interested in participating. On November 18th, IACA will host a Health Fair at the University of Indianapolis which immediately follows the joint meeting of IACA and Indianapolis Chinese Professional Association (ICPA). The Health Fair will be free to everybody. You can have your blood pressure checked, blood sugar/cholesterol tested and receive helpful information about your health, both in Chinese and English. So mark your calendar and come to have fun.

The most important upcoming event, however, is the election this year. For us to exercise our right as US citizens, we need to vote. I urge everyone to go to the booth this November 7 and let our voice heard by casting our ballot.

Rudy Young

Remember to Vote on November 7. Your Vote Does Make A Difference
Can your vote really make a difference? An Ann Landers column listed the
following examples of how one vote can make a difference.

In 1776, one vote gave America the English language instead of German.
In 1845, one vote brought Texas into the Union.
In 1868, one vote saved President Andrew Johnson from impeachment.
In 1876, one vote gave Rutherford B. Hayes the presidency of the United States.
In 1923, one vote gave Adolf Hitler leadership of the Nazi Party.
In 1941, one vote saved Selective Service -- weeks before Pearl Harbor was attacked.
John F. Kennedy won and Richard Nixon lost the presidential election by less than one vote per precinct in 1960.
Richard Nixon won and Hubert Humphrey lost the presidential election by fewer than three votes per precinct in 1968.
In Indiana, a congressional race was won by just 47 votes in 1986.
Get out there and vote! Don't let others determine your future! Don't say that your vote won't count! Don't let apathy overrun you! You and your vote matter!
