Notes From The President

September 26, 1999

Dear fellow IACA members:

"In disaster, one finds true brothers" is an old Chinese proverb. Disaster has struck. Six days ago, a killer earthquake, measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale, struck central Taiwan, causing catastrophic damage to many towns and cities while the people were sleeping. So far, over 2100 are known dead and many are unaccounted for, some presumed to be trapped under collapsed buildings. The casualty figures will likely rise. Several hundred thousand are without food and shelter, living in fear of aftershocks. It is estimated that it will take billions of dollars to rebuild what nature so cruelly destroyed in a matter of seconds. In human terms, there will be orphans and permanently injured who will require care for years to come.

Are we true brothers and sisters to the Taiwanese people or are we not? The time to show it is now. Please donate generously to the Taiwan Earthquake Relief Fund. Please send your check to any one of the following three local organizations; each will put your donation to good use.

American Red Cross of Greater Indianapolis
441 East 10th Street
Indianapolis, IN 46202

Taiwanese American Association of Indianapolis
Treasurer, Tona Hwang
7536 Perrier Drive
Indianapolis, IN 46278

Buddhist Compassion Relief Tsu-Chi Foundation
U.S.A. Indianapolis Liaison Office
9211 Selkirk Court
Indianapolis, IN 46260

All three are non-profit, tax-exempt organizations; therefore your donation is entirely tax deductible. As a personal option, you can indicate on your check that you are a proud member of IACA (just mark IACA in the memo); each organization has promised to tabulate IACA's total donations so we can be apprised of our combined effort.

On behalf of the earthquake victims, I thank you for your gesture of brotherly love.

Sincerely yours,

Benny Ko and IACA council
